Americans have always looked toward celebrities for the latest styles and trends and to find out what’s hot and what’s not. Consumers make many of their decisions on everything from fashion, hairstyles and diets to cars, music and home decorating based on what they see in celebrity culture.

Using E-Score® Celebrity, we surveyed people across the country to see which celebrities will have the most influence over consumers’ decisions on styles, trends and fashion in the year ahead.

Americans will be looking toward two women from across the pond for the latest fashions, with Kate Middleton and Victoria Beckham as the two most trendsetting female celebrities. Rap and urban music will set the tone for men’s style, with the likes of Pharrell Williams, Ne-Yo, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Macklemore, Usher and Jay Z all in the top 10 among male celebrities. The trendiest couple will no doubt be the Beckhams, with soccer star David joining his wife high on the list.

With 30 second ads on Fox’s telecast of the Super Bowl selling for a record-setting $4 million, the stakes are higher than ever for brands to make an impact.

As USA TODAY notes, many brands are using celebrities in their campaigns in order to optimize both the large television audience and the critical social media presence. Several brands are loading up with multiple celebrities in a single commercial. The trend of Super Bowl advertisers to release full or teaser versions of their ads prior to the broadcast may also increase the value of celebrities who are able to draw attention from online audiences.

Against this backdrop, as we did in 2012 and 2013, E-Poll once again took a look at what the celebrities in these ads bring to their respective brands’ campaigns.

Here are the E-Scores for the celebrity endorsers in this year’s Super Bowl advertisements:

LeBron James’ E-Score Restored To Pre-Cavaliers Departure Level

$

After a series of “decisions” and public relations nightmares, apparently all it takes to get back in the good graces of the American public is some cupcakes and returning to your hometown team. According to a recent consumer survey we lebron-james-cavaliers-playoffs-tight-file-60fcc520d57e9b95_largeconducted using E-Score®, our leading consumer research service that provides information to media and entertainment companies, LeBron James’ E-Score has returned to almost the same level it was before he decided to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers in a manner that was found objectionable by many. An E-Score can range from 0 to 100 and is based on a survey that formulates a rating of that person’s awareness and appeal, as well as positive and negative measures.  The ongoing national survey of over 8,000 celebrities is conducted among 1,100 persons ages 13+ with general representation across income, age, education and geographic demographics to represent a cross-section of the U.S. population. In 2010, just prior to announcing he would be leaving the Cavaliers for the Heat, James’ E-Score was 84; less than three months after the now infamous decision, his E-Score dropped dramatically to 47. By July lbj escore graph2013, James had partially repaired his image by winning some championships, exhibiting better sportsmanship and bringing home Olympic gold for the USA, all of which contributed toward his E-Score rising to 67. And finally, announcing his return to Cleveland three weeks ago through a heartfelt letter published in Sports Illustrated, pulled him back up to an E-Score of 80 in July 2014.   “LeBron has taken quite a journey during the past four years; not just from Cleveland to Miami and back, but in his appeal and likeability as a professional athlete and value as a spokesperson for major brands,” said Gerry Philpott, president of E-Poll Market Research. “The peaks and valleys of his E-Score these past 4 years show that consumers can be unforgiving at times, but are also willing to forgive and forget if a celebrity comes through and does the right thing.” E-Score is a product of E-Poll Market Research, a full service consumer research company that provides quantitative and qualitative research to media, entertainment and Fortune 1,000 companies. Competitive Talent Shows Succeed In Creating Lasting Stars

SideHeadShot_HiRes_Color_Daughtry_MichaelWaringAs the new season of American Idol is underway, past winners and contestants are enjoying more fame and popularity than ever imagined thanks to the power of popular competitive talent shows, according to our recent E-Score® consumer survey.

The survey ranked past American Idol winners according to whom respondents think is most talented. Kelly Clarkson and Philip Phillips tied for the number one spot, followed closely by Jordin Sparks and Scotty McCreery. Winning it all on American Idol, however, is not a prerequisite for winning the hearts of America. Several American Idol performers who missed the confetti were ranked just as high, if not higher, than the first place winners. Pia Toscano and Chris Daughtry tied for the most talented non-winners, with scores that were higher than all other contestants.

Even more noteworthy is that the majority of American Idol winners and most popular contestants ranked the same or higher than the average score for all music performers, which includes everyone from Nicki Minaj and Rihanna to Michael Buble and Kenny Chesney.

“What these numbers show us is how an unknown performer can catapult themselves into a successful career as a result of appearing on American Idol or one of the other talent shows,” said Gerry Philpott, president of E-Poll Market Research. “Even with a more crowded field of shows, and shifts in ratings performance, these programs have sustained a powerful launch pad for new talent.”

At only 21 years of age, golfer Jordan Spieth, a Texas native, is having a breakout season. He won the 79th Masters Tournament on April 12th and became the second youngest winner (behind Tiger Woods by just a few months) to win the first major of the season. He followed that up with a win at the US Open, and was narrowly defeated at the (British) Open Championship, ending his run for the calendar year Grand Slam.

Spieth is a breath of fresh air for golf and while his awareness among the general public is still fairly low, his riveting performance this season not only won him the coveted Green Jacket, but also raised virtually every E-Score stat on his Scorecard compared to last year.

Who Are Baseball’s Marketing All-Stars?

With the baseball season around the corner, we asked MLB fans which players they find most appealing. Are these the players baseball fans want to see most in advertising?

Highest Appeal Among MLB Fans

most appealing baseball*Average MLB Player = all players in E-Poll database. Both active and retired.

It’s no surprise Mike Trout’s awareness is high having been the face of baseball for the past few years. Evan Longoria has a higher awareness, but is considerably less appealing than Trout. Will Mike Trout’s awareness go up as he gains more notoriety as a baseball legend?

While Trout and Longoria represent the MLB’s home-grown stars, one of the game’s most recognizable international stars, Ichiro Suzuki vows to play in the MLB until he is 50. At 42, it will be interesting to see how his power to attract marketing dollars changes over the next 8 years.

Two players with contrasting levels of appeal, Dustin Pedroia and Miguel Cabrera have very similar scores in awareness. Could this be a function of the teams they play for?

Will these be the players gracing more marketing campaigns for this baseball season? Or will campaigns use the “baseball legends” with a larger awareness? Each of the most appealing players on this list has a smaller awareness than the average MLB player from our database of current and retired players.

These Celebrities Have What It Takes To Succeed In Fashion

With a growing number of celebrities designing their own fashion collection, we wanted to find out who actually has what it takes to make it in fashion. Using E-Poll data we found which celeb-designers are considered “Trend-Setters” and “Stylish” among Fashionistas (consumers who feel that being current with styles/fashion is important).

Celebrity Designer- Trend Setter

Top 15 Celebrity-Designers considered “Stylish” among Fashionistas

Celebrity Designer- Stylish

Celebrities known for their definitive styles and fashion sense can quickly find success producing their own fashion lines. Many are finding success through collaborations with established brands. Kanye West is possibly the most well known celebrity brand collaborator. His current deal with Adidas is his second major shoe deal, following his massively successful collaboration with Nike. While Yeezy decided to leave the Nike family, amid some controversy, Nike still holds the keys to the celebrity collaboration kingdom. This is evident by their countless athlete and celebrity endorsements. One of these, Serena Williams, was the inspiration behind Nike’s “Greatness Collection”- a line that included footwear as well as apparel for on, or off the court. It appears the sneaker companies are all putting their hats into the celebrity endorsement game. In December 2015, it was announced that Rihanna would become the Artistic Director for a Puma capsule collection, in addition to her role as ambassador for the brand. While the shoe companies are ahead of the game, many fashion brands understand the impact of celebrity backing as well. Many fast fashion brands have found great success with their celebrity collaborations. H&M is one such company to gain notoriety with capsule collections by celebrities. Their first foray into a celebrity-backed line was “M by Madonna” in 2007.

Celebrities have been lending their names to fashion brands for collaborations for years. The public wants to live vicariously through the products celebrities are tied to. Is there anyway better than wearing something a celebrity designed on his or her own? Many celebrities try their hand at their own line, a line as unique to their style. One such celeb-designer, Pharrell is constantly seen in pieces from his line, Billionaire Boys Club. Jessica Simpson has created a brand with over 30 categories full of affordable and attainable pieces for the masses. Possibly the best known celeb-designers, Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen used their fame to create 3 diverse fashion lines ranging from the inexpensive Olsenboye to the luxurious The Row, with Elizabeth & James in between. They are even adding an eye wear line to their many offerings. The Generational Divide

Generations-divide

Differences between Generation X and Millennials are the topics of frequent writings and studies. This is in part due to the fast paced changes and advances the world has experienced during the lifetime of Millennials. From technology to the definition of “famous”, these two groups see the world very distinctly. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that they also differ in their opinions of many of Hollywood’s celebrities.

We asked members of Generation X and Millennials to rate their favorite 20 actors. The results show many differences between the 2 generations.

generation-full-chart

Only 7 celebrities show up on both lists with varying appeal scores. However, Gen X and Millennials can agree on one thing: the love of Betty White. She takes the top spot on both lists and is ranked way above average for both generations. Best known as a comedian, television star and animal rights activist it comes as no surprise she has an appeal that spans generations. Betty is not alone is receiving love from both groups, six others also appeared on both lists.

Two celebrities joining Betty White with cross-over appeal between both categories are Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. Both had consistent appeal scores between the generational groups, 44% and 43% respectively. While Denzel Washington ranks 8th with Gen X, he drops to 14th with Millennials. Likewise, Morgan Freeman’s ranking goes from 10 with Gen-Xers to 17 with Millennials. Though they both see a drop in appeal from Gen. X to Millennials, the fact that both make our list of top celebrities in both categories is a testament to their abilities and demand as actors.

While Denzel and Mr. Freeman’s appeal was unaffected by the generational divide, Chris Pratt is a different story. While he shows up on both lists, his appeal gap is the largest between the generations. Whereas Millennials ranked him 3rd with 51% appeal, Generation X gave him the #12 spot with 43%. Although his ranking does fluctuate between the two, there are others who appear, with varying results, on both lists as well.

While the majority of celebrities are exclusive to one list or the other, Betty, Denzel, Mr. Freeman, and Chris Pratt are part of a group that also includes: Maggie Smith, Tom Hanks and Shemar Moore. This cross-over section proves that there are similarities among these contrasting groups.

We can see many differences between the two generations from this list. However, with a common favorite and six additional actors on both lists, maybe the differences aren’t that extreme.

Stars Finding Success In The Stream

No longer does television just mean broadcast. Online streaming media services are adding original content to their offerings, ushering in the age of “binge watching.”

Here is how the streaming stars of original TV series on Amazon, Hulu and Netflix ranked:

Stars of Streaming

streaming starsstars of streaming instructions

There are currently 89 original shows streaming on Amazon¹, Hulu² and Netflix². With multiple new shows being announced, it is evident that these streaming services have found a new niche with original content.

One of the strongest performers in that niche is also the strongest performer on this list. With Critics Choice Award and People’s Choice Award wins for the show, it’s not surprising that Orange Is The New Black tops the list with six entries, including the top spot. Though her character Crazy Eyes is not the main focus of the show, multiple award winning actress Uzo Aduba steals most scenes and ranks highest in appeal. She is joined on this list by Emmy-nominated Laverne Cox. While OITNB has the most, it is not the only show with multiple entries.

Although, spread over two shows, Marvel makes an impressive showing with four characters. Apparently, Killgrave’s appeal reaches beyond Jessica Jones, as David Tennant comes in right behind Ms. Aduba with the second spot on our list. His Jessica Jones co-star, Mike Colter, also makes an appearance. Daredevil characters take up two spots on the list, but interestingly Charlie Cox, who plays Daredevil, comes in behind his on-screen girlfriend Deborah Ann Woll.

The final show with multiple stars on this list is Amazon’s Golden Globe winning, Mozart In The Jungle, with two. Another Amazon show to make the list features former broadcast TV star, John Goodman who adds appeal to the Alpha House cast.

While some former broadcast TV stars are crossing over, some shows are also finding success in the streaming world after a cancellation from broadcast TV. Hulu made the move to revive The Mindy Project, following Fox’s cancellation. While its star enjoys a high E-Score, Mindy Kaling has an average appeal among all streaming actors. Kaling is a new comer to the streaming world, but both she and The Mindy Project continue to see success in the new medium.

Digital streaming is a new medium on the rise and the growing appeal is evident as these shows continue to increase subscribers for their respective services. Streaming is also proving to be beneficial for talent, as these shows gain more exposure and awards. It’s becoming obvious that original streaming content, and its stars are making a permanent place for themselves.

Hollywood-stars-2013-list

While comedy clubs and festivals are still considered proving grounds for finding young new comedians, some have chosen an alternate route by way of posting videos to social media to exploit their own brand of comedy.

Of all the social networks, YouTube appears to be the channel of choice for young comedians with eight celebrities on our list coming from there. YouTube claims to reach more 18-34 year olds than any cable network, and considering that 51% of Millennials who like comedy television shows find YouTube Funny, it can help expose young comedians to a vast audience.  This is a significant increase over the 17% Funny average for all social networks among Millennials who like comedy TV.

Although YouTube is leading the way, other social networks are also helping on the unconventional road to stardom. Among them is Vine, though not as popular as other networks, it has shown to be a prime channel for up and coming comedians with 38% of all those surveyed agreeing the platform is Funny. That number grows to 47% among Millennials. Though not considered as Funny as Vine, Instagram and Twitter, Vine’s parent company, have also been successful avenues for new comedians.

With ease of upload and built-in distribution to potentially millions of people, social networks are proving to be viable channels to jump-start comedic careers and provide an unconventional path to stardom.
